Patented vs Restricted Cylinders: What Is The Difference?

19 February 2026

The term “patented cylinder” gets used constantly in the locksmith trade, often alongside phrases like “restricted key system”. But if you’re advising customers properly, especially on master key systems and commercial jobs, you need to understand exactly what the differences between the two terms are, what patent protection does, and just as importantly, what it doesn’t do.

What Is a Patented Cylinder?

A patented cylinder is part of a locking system where the key design is protected by an active legal patent. That protection typically covers the key profile, milling, side tracks, moving elements, or other mechanical features that make the key unique. The key point is simple: while the patent remains active, it is illegal for unauthorised manufacturers to produce compatible key blanks. That legal protection is what separates a patented system from a standard restricted one.

What Is a Restricted Cylinder System?

A restricted cylinder system relies on supply control. Key blanks are distributed only to authorised dealers, and duplication is controlled commercially. That works well until suppliers change policy, or copy blanks enter the market.

Legal Protection: The Critical Difference

The line between “restricted” and “patented” is sometimes blurred, but it’s important to understand that they are not the same. A patented system has legal backing. If someone manufactures or imports unauthorised blanks during the life of the patent, they are infringing intellectual property law.

That is a far stronger position, particularly for commercial customers who depend on long-term key control.

Patented Key Systems: The Locksmith's Advantage

A significant trade advantage of patented systems is their ability to generate repeat business. Since customers cannot obtain duplicate keys from unauthorized sources, they must return to you for additional keys, spares, and replacements. This fosters long-term customer loyalty and ensures ongoing revenue from key cutting and system expansion.

It's important to clarify a common misconception: patent protection focuses on key control, not physical attack resistance. A patented cylinder may offer only moderate resistance to snapping or drilling, while a highly robust anti-snap cylinder might not be patented. These are distinct features. When selecting a cylinder, consider both the legal control of the key and the mechanical security of the product.
