IP68 Padlocks: What Are The Benefits?
1 April 2026
Padlocks don’t usually get much attention…until they fail. And when they do, it’s rarely convenient. It’s a seized mechanism on a site gate, a corroded lock on coastal equipment, or a unit that simply won’t open after a few months of exposure. That’s basically the problem IP68 padlocks are built to solve.
IP68 is just a rating, but it tells you one important thing: this padlock is made to handle rough conditions without giving up. The “IP” stands for Ingress Protection (basically, how well stuff is kept out).
The “6” means it’s completely sealed against dust. So, no dirt gets inside and messes up the mechanism. In practice, that means consistent operation in environments like construction sites or industrial settings where airborne debris is unavoidable.
The “8” relates to water resistance. IP68 padlocks are designed to withstand continuous immersion beyond one metre. More importantly, they prevent internal corrosion and contamination, which are the usual causes of failure in outdoor padlocks.
Built to Last, Whatever the Weather
This means fewer problems. A lock on an outdoor gate doesn’t stiffen up after a week of bad weather. One on a storage unit still opens cleanly after sitting untouched all winter. If it’s near the coast, it’s far less likely to quietly corrode from the inside out. Your customers won’t be fighting with it, spraying it, or replacing it every few months. The padlock will just do its job no matter the conditions.
Where Durability Makes a Difference
You'll see the benefits in harsh environments. Construction sites, for instance, are full of dust that can damage standard locks over time.
Coastal areas present similar challenges with salt-laden air affecting cheaper materials. Even garden gates need robust locks against constant weather.
Outdoor structures like compounds and storage units also benefit greatly. Locks here are often exposed long-term, making resistance to the elements crucial.
Is It Always Necessary?
Not for every situation. Indoors or in protected settings, a regular padlock typically suffices.
